I went to Des Moines last week to see my mom and nephling (as well as briefly see my dad who was in town for unrelated reasons). It went very well. It's nice to reconnect with my mom, who I haven't seen since November 2019 and who lives in Ireland now. Also, I had some really nice moments with the nephling. We went to the Iowa State Fair on Friday which made me feel old as hell. I spent most of the day just looking for an air conditioned place to sit down.

NO MOVIES

I was in Phoenix with [personal profile] sol_se when last week's post would have gone up, so I saved up my movies for one mega-post today (which is also a day late oops).

Movies in italics are ones I've seen before.

The Harvey Girls (1946)
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
The Band Wagon (1953)
On the Town (1949)
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Cinematic Titanic: Legacy of Blood (with [personal profile] sol_se and Mom)
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) (with [personal profile] sol_se)
Cinematic Titanic: The Wasp Woman (with [personal profile] sol_se and Mom)
Frozen (2013)
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949)
Charlie's Angels (2019) (with [personal profile] elipie[personal profile] kuwdora, and others)
Falling Inn Love (2019) (with [personal profile] sol_se)
The Last Detail (1973)

For the time I wasn't in Phoenix, my viewing was largely dominated by either Criterion Channel's MGM Musicals collection or my new Disney+ subscription (yes I'm also watching The Mandalorian). I was also watching a lot of Desert Bus, an annual internet telethon raising money for Child's Play charity.

The Adventures of Robin Hood and Ghost in the Shell made for a curious double feature when I was stuck in Burbank airport for several more hours than intended. I had to go with whatever was on my iPad at the time and these were it. The first was acquired as a parting gift from Filmstruck when they shut down. The latter was source for my robots vid that was never clipped or used.

The new Charlie's Angels is charming AF. If Disaster Gay is Kristen Stewart's new archetype, I'm all for it. Bring it on.

I'm a sucker for a dopey and formulaic romantic comedy, so sometimes [personal profile] sol_se and I will watch something along those lines for our date night. It has to be, like, Hallmark movie level, though, with just the faintest hint of name actors (if there are any names at all). Falling Inn Love fit the bill perfectly.

The Last Detail took me, like, two weeks to watch in fits and spurts, with a whole Phoenix vacation in the middle. I wanted to watch it because it has, for my money, a great iconic plot: one last hurrah before going away from civilization (in this case, to Naval prison). I'm pretty sure Stargate SG-1 had a similar episode. I have a lot of trouble with Jack Nicholson though, even if he is directed by Hal Ashby. I finally made it through, though. It's not really my kind of movie, I guess.

[personal profile] sol_se and I are far enough into our relationship that we've decided its time to meet parents, so we both flew to Phoenix so she could meet my mother, sister, sister-in-law, and nephling.

It went really well! My family just adores sol_se and think she's amazing, which is good and true and accurate. We all went out to dinner several times, including once to Medieval Times (lots of fun, don't need to do again any time soon). My sister also talked the two of us into going to a Sleater-Kinney show, which was great up until the point where I was too old for it and had to bow out with a headache.

My nephling is growing up. They're going to be thirteen next week. Thirteen! They remain a puckish person, often to the annoyance of everyone. Luckily, my sister seems to know how to handle them.

One very sweet thing my mom did was get sol_se and I our own AirBnB so that we could have some alone time between the many, many family gatherings. That's a very good mom right there.

It's always wonderful to see sol_se. She's the light that guides me and makes me strive to be a better person so she doesn't end up with a disaster man. There was lots of cuddling and goofiness and loving words.

It was very hard to leave her at the end of the trip. Luckily, our flights were very close together, so we were able to go through security together and wait at my gate for my boarding. Still, the bottom fell out of my stomach as we parted. Hopefully, she will be in Los Angeles soon and permanently.

So, some of you know I've been on a quest for a new MacBook Pro. This has been made more difficult by the fact that my budget this year can handle either said MacBook or Comic-Con. Since I need the MacBook FOR Comic-Con, this clearly would not work. So I applied for credit. Denied. So I took Mom with me to apply for credit at the Apple Store today...

And they're still processing.

How hard is it to give me a laptop, people? Really! I just want to be able to run multiple programs at once without feeling like my computer is going to go into core meltdown.

Mom's promised to call me the minute she hears back from the nice credit people. I will have you, MacBook Pro. Oh yes, I will have you.

I don't know why this thought struck me when it did, or why it struck me at all. I'd rather it hadn't. As I was closing my laptop before turning in for the night, it struck me. Someday, my mother will die and I'll have to go to her funeral.

I've always known that, of course. It's the first time I've believed it, though, and I'm really rather upset right now.

Some of ya'll may recall that back at the end of 2005, I co-ran a little RP called [livejournal.com profile] fandomhigh (and occasionally ran ran, much to the consternation of my stress levels). This was an amazingly huge timesuck and prevented me from doing a lot of the things that I loved to do -- like actually watch fandom shows.

I'm starting to really cringe every Thursday morning after Lost and Veronica Mars have aired, because I haven't caught an episode since early November. I want to know what's going on, but I don't want to run out and just spoil myself, either.

At the same time, what with having the girlfriend and all, I just don't have the time to download and watch the shows. Pretty much, right now, I'm waiting for the seasonal DVDs to come out this summer and I'll catch up then.

But I'll be damned if I'm missing the new season of Doctor Who. No how, no way. No sirree.

Instead, I've been watching a metric crap-ton of films and guiding [livejournal.com profile] midnightfae through the wonders of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

What I've been watching )

And in case you were wondering...

I'm staying at Mom's this week, watching her dogs while she's in Long Beach, CA at a conference for medical librarians. The nice thing about this setup is that Mom's laptop is hooked up to the 'net, but it doesn't have all the frills and fringes that tend to keep me on for all hours of the day (like, say, Trillian).

I'm hoping to use this week to springboard some new habits that'll keep me off the computer and into the more productive real world. Writing, reading, playing with the dogs, going outside and enjoying the omggasp fresh air.

I won't say that I won't be posting as much, because every time I do say that, I end up posting more than usual. So, uh, whatever.

Nice extra bonus to all of this is Mom has a huge TV, so watching Farscape Season 3 should be pretty trippy.

Mom came by to drop some stuff off, saw how out of it I was looking, and asked me how I was.

I think I must have cried for half an hour.

No need to clog the flists up )

In other news, is 25 dollars a day enough to eat on in San Diego?

Er, the title's a riff on a bit of Stuart Davis between-song dialogue. Which makes no sense unless you're me and listen incessantly to bootleg Stuart Davis MP3s.

Meh.

Got my laptop in today, works like a charm. Loving loving loving. It even has Microsoft Works loaded on it, which saves to Word 2.0, so I can port stuff between computers more effectively. It has a modem, too, but that doesn't do me any good, really - and honestly, I bought it specifically to stay off the 'net when I wrote.

Had lunch with Mom today. Got her a bit upset, really, because I was relaying information Dad had given me about her, which I didn't really believe because Dad has a tendency to alter the past to suit his needs. The info called her ability to parent into question, like a lot, and I got some straight answers about it. She regrets to this day not fighting for us, but I understand her decision, and there's no way I was getting out of the childhood without massive scars, anyway, so there's no need to dwell on the past.

In any case, whether Mom alters history or not, her version of things is much more believable because she admits her flaws and mistakes. Dad, if you listened to him, doesn't really have any to admit, but gosh, he would if he did, he's so perfect (*rollseyes*).

Daddy issues? Me?

Discovered [livejournal.com profile] rightclicklick today. Guh. Very useful addition to the LJ community. I approve.

Er, what else? Toying with a bunch of writing projects, as usual. Doing my first solo weekend as the mod at [livejournal.com profile] btvs_episodic while Jen does some end-of-the-school-year stuff... Going to Jester'z tonight to hang with [livejournal.com profile] ropa and watch some funny.

No job yet, but soon!
