Final Cut Studio Won't Be Dumbed Down.

There was some concern that the next version of FCS would be dumbed down (much like iMovie has been in recent iterations) in order to target the "prosumer" market more effectively. Apparently, that's not the gist of the changes coming to the program.

Good, because I'm seriously thinking about investing in the full Final Cut package. Just as soon as I get a new laptop and find someone who has an Apple discount who I can exploit. I mean, uh, hug.

So, I'm quickly learning one of the more annoying aspects of the Mac. The multiple iLife programs (iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto) create copies of the files they import. This is not a problem in and of itself. What is a problem is that you tend to end up with two of everything on the machine when you only need the one.

I downloaded a Java app (which isn't perfect, alas) to handle the dupes, but it took pretty much all evening and was kind of a pain in the ass (I probably could've just nuked the dupe folders, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't deleting anything I only had the one of).

Also, having a hard-drive that is three times the size of my largest previous hard-drive has made me greedy. I start getting really concerned about file space when I get down to 50 GB now. Mind you, part of this is that I'm vidding now and I work with large-size movie files more often. I really need to get some external hard-drives or something.

I definitely need more RAM.

So. I finished Ender's Game last night. I totally should've seen that ending coming, but I didn't. I lose.

But. All of this reading has me thinking and plotting and considering. I'm not saying I'm returning to writing fiction again any time soon, but I do rather like the gamut of ideas flowing through my brain right now. Strangely, none of them have to do with Card's concepts, really.

I also started Neuromancer and I'm really concerned that my future-noir novel's central conceit is going to need a complete revision if I stumble onto it while I'm educating myself on cyberpunk.

ETA: I am dumb and did not post about the really BIG news. I bought a new MacBook Pro last night! It's the one in the middle. It's very shiny. The only problem is that the screen does not tilt back very far, which causes problems for those of us whose heads are very far from our laps. I may need to get, like, a laptop lap tray or something.

So, some of you know I've been on a quest for a new MacBook Pro. This has been made more difficult by the fact that my budget this year can handle either said MacBook or Comic-Con. Since I need the MacBook FOR Comic-Con, this clearly would not work. So I applied for credit. Denied. So I took Mom with me to apply for credit at the Apple Store today...

And they're still processing.

How hard is it to give me a laptop, people? Really! I just want to be able to run multiple programs at once without feeling like my computer is going to go into core meltdown.

Mom's promised to call me the minute she hears back from the nice credit people. I will have you, MacBook Pro. Oh yes, I will have you.

Just handed a check to my old boss at work and he handed over an older PowerBook G4 with a 14" screen.

I just became a Mac user.

Huzzah!

ETA: Okay, it's a 12-inch. But still.
