In Fremont
Aug. 30th, 2008 01:34 pmIn Fremont, CA right now at
midnightfae's ancestral home (so to speak), after an uneventful but looooong 13-hour drive (include two hours where we pulled into a gas station and napped). On Monday, we move
midnightfae into her new apartment in Davis, CA. Then I fly home. By myself. To my newly roommate-free apartment.
There's a certain melancholy pall over this whole weekend, I won't lie.

Stormy Weather
Aug. 29th, 2008 09:23 amMan that was a storm last night. It was raining so hard that
midnightfae and I thought that it was hail at one point. Winds were clocked, apparently, at 100 MPH out by the airport. Our power went out for long stretches twice and flickered a bunch otherwise. Which was annoying as we were *trying* to finish Supernatural Season 2 before
midnightfae moves to California (starting tonight, FYI). We didn't quite get to the two-part finale.
But yeah, except for one abortive, ill-advised attempt to trek to Walgreens (somebody just had to have a Diet Snapple -- stupid SPN product placement), we remain relatively unscathed.
The carport fell on my car, however, when a tree fell onto it. Good thing I'm not actually using the car right now.

This Has Been... Quite a Week
Jun. 5th, 2008 02:21 pmWe had
coltsbane staying with us from Monday-Wednesday -- she arrived Monday afternoon and left Wednesday afternoon, so we only had Tuesday as our one full, proper day with her. From the list below, choose the the worst possible things to occur on Tuesday:
A) I have my first serious hangover in YEARS.
B)
midnightfae stabs herself in the leg.
C) I get food poisoning.
D)
midnightfae gets food poisoning.
E) All of the above.
If you chose E, you have accurately selected what actually happened. Two words of warning -- do not drink a heavy-on-the-rum rum and coke and a Mike's Hard Lime at the same time and avoid, when possible, the IHOP that's south of Thomas on Central Ave. in Phoenix.
Also, if you must carry a kitchen knife in a thin-material canvas bag, remove it once its purpose has been served.
Neither
midnightfae or I are fully recovered from our food poisoning experience. I think I'm actually feeling worse than I did yesterday.
Also, I was extremely late to work because we're dogsitting Abby, the Coolest Bulldog Ever, and I was running late and she really needed to go out... but not so much that she couldn't take her sweet sweet time getting her business done. Silly Abby.

Only my roommate...
Jun. 3rd, 2008 02:04 pmThat's my roommate for you. The one day we have company and she lacerates a limb.
Busy Busy Weekend
May. 27th, 2008 12:26 pmSaturday
The Roomie left me her car to run errands, so that's pretty much what I did all day. First I stopped by Mom's to pick up some packages I had mailed there, including the Night of the Living Dead 40th Anniversary DVD with the Classic-Horror quote on the back cover. Mom was babysitting my niece, who ran over to give me a big hug. It was the cutest thing ever.
After that, I ran to the hardware store to pick up some materials for the Memorial Day Project. Then I spent more time and drove more miles than I'd like to admit trying to find sufficient Testors Metal Flake Ruby Red paint, as the Project requires it in large quantities.
Picked up the roomie from work, dropped her off at the gym. Instead of heading to the nearby Best Buy, I headed into Bookstar, which was a book store that I'd seen a billion times but never gone into. It looked chintzy from the outside and I'd always assumed it was a half-price used bookshop. Nope. It was a Barnes & Noble in everything but the sign on the front and the way the employees answered the phone. Even the little placards over the individual sections said "Barnes & Noble". I ended up spending *coughcough* on some books on digital photography, web design (I'm trying to get a more elegant look for Classic-Horror) and Final Cut Express.
Sunday
Programmed my new Universal Remote. The old one only really controlled my stereo receiver and my VCR. This one handles everything but the Playstation 3 (which can't be helped because it receives over Bluetooth). I did have to reprogram Every Single Key for the HD-DVD player, because while the box received the signal, it thought I was trying to control a Standard DVD player and would throw up a little message on the front display that said "HD-DVD" instead of, y'know, doing something.
Edited two reviews and one Masters biography. Started working on a new fanvid for Donna Noble set to Oingo Boingo's Just Another Day.
Went to the coffeehouse that night with The Roomie to finish up some other work.
Memorial Day
Woke up early, skipped breakfast and computer to go directly to beginning the Memorial Day Project: painting the pieces of what will eventually be my very own Tom Servo puppet. The Roommate gathered them about a year and a half ago as a Christmas present, but circumstances prevented her from putting it together. Now we've finally decided to tackle this as a team. I have high hopes for its completion before she leaves for vet school in three months.
The Roomie's boyfriend came over that night and we watched Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie, followed by Mystery Science Theater: Mr. B. Natural, then Cinematic Titanic: The Oozing Skull, and finally Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. Good times were had by all.

Amusing Things and Other Stuff
May. 19th, 2008 09:49 am- Latest episode of Doctor Who is made of total win. I kind of want to read some Agatha Christie now. Maybe after I finish my Tour of Sci-Fi in 2010. Donna Noble may be surpassing Martha Jones as my favorite New!Who companion.
- Been watching classic Twilight Zone episodes to research an article for Classic-Horror. Watching Telly Savalas match wits with a creepy doll is kind of unnerving. Watching William Shatner actually act rather than rely on his own sense of self-satisfaction is REALLY unnerving.
- In the world of Harry Dresden, I have finished Summer Knight and have moved on to Death Masks. Summer Knight ended much better than it started. I'm kind of hoping that Death Masks will be the same, although comments from
midnightfae don't give me a lot of hope.
-
midnightfae warned me that Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation would be a painful experience. I didn't believe that it could approach Orgy of the Dead levels of suffering. I have suffered for my incredulity. The only bright spot is that Matthew McConaughey plays an surprisingly effective psychopath.
- Speaking of The Twilight Zone, I wrote a joke opening paragraph for the Japanese movie Jigoku (Hell) where I mock Sartre and high school students who get their interpretation of Sartre entirely from the last line of No Exit. I showed it to
midnightfae because I thought she'd get a kick out of it and then tell me to write something serious. She told me to go with the joke opening because it totally worked. Weeeeeird.
- Indiana Jones cereal is like eating Chocolate Kix with Marshmallows.
- Went to one-half of an Indy marathon at
desertwillow's place yesterday. Ending up reading the Gospel of 100 F**king Tacos in my very best Christopher Lee. And got smacked for a comment about "Snakes on a Flame".
- My kitty is getting a tooth out today, as well as getting a lion cut. There will be pictures.
-
timjr wrote the definitive squee on Robert Fuest's The Abominable Dr. Phibes. Read it. Love it. It makes me want to wander off and review its immediate sequel, Dr. Phibes Rises Again, which contains an elaborate Henry James joke.
-
midnightfae and I kept getting stuck in really painful gigglefits all weekend for no reason we can discern. One of us would start giggling and the other would continue and then we would keep fueling each other. People who were in the condo at Comic-Con last July will remember what this is like.
- Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is eating what remains of my free time. In a way, it's kind of lucky that my girlfriend is in China, because I think this would annoy the crap out of her. I blame
hjcallipygian.
- Two months and one week until Comic-Con.

Finished Neuromancer
Apr. 30th, 2008 10:44 amYeah, that ended up pretty much as I thought it would, with a few twists. I blame Deus Ex for ganking the ending for plot point (although with less cleverness). Still, a damned good read.
Also, I've figured out how to work around the plot similarities in my unfinished novel without altering my basic plot mechanics too too much.
Working on Summer Knight right now so I can continue the Dresden Files and so that
midnightfae will stop pouting about not being able to share plot points with me.

In Response
Mar. 28th, 2008 06:56 pmIt would be terribly low of me to respond to
midnightfae's latest round of vicious lies in the way I think she anticipates. We are not savages and I will not descend to her level.
In fact, I'm going to extend the olive branch. And to show my good will, I'm letting everyone know Julia's favorite places for a light scratching:
Right behind the knees. Try it sometime! The look on her face will be worth the effort.

Re-rebuttal
Mar. 28th, 2008 01:17 amAlso, she really likes it when people poke her in the side. Loves it, in fact. She makes a curious noise which she's told me repeatedly is one of joy.

Various Notes
Mar. 14th, 2008 10:36 am- Finally was able to actually attend a THEM reconvene. We played Smash Bros. Brawl on Hammer's Wii, bothered some of the fine folks at the local Sonic, and watched the first two episodes of "Coupling." Lots of people there, lots of geeking out. Still can't get used to that damned Wii-mote, though.
- Great moments in awkward dialogue:
At the reconvene, I'm talking about why I didn't buy a Wii when I had the opportunity last month with this other girl who I just met and whose name eludes me.
- My great-uncle Phil became an actor after his retirement, working mostly in very-low-budget dramas and a few horror films. He just got in touch with me asking what the policy about sending screeners to Classic-Horror is. I'm still trying to figure out how to tell him we don't really review movies that come from direct-to-video-only distributors or that don't have a distributor yet at all. The quality is almost always poor and the reviews stagnate on the site unread. I'm talking with Mom about how best to approach this.
- McCain says that terrorist might try to tip the election. "Vote for me or you vote with the terrorists!" What. Ever.
Have to finish up my Shivers review tonight. Appropriately for a David Cronenberg film, it's kind of mutated into a hybrid of literary critique and straight movie review.

Me: [midnightfae] talked me out of it.
Girl: What? It's the Wii. You have to ignore your girlfriend... (off my "uh, no" look) or wife...midnightfae: (frosty) Roommate.

Pre-Birthday Countdown
Feb. 8th, 2008 12:19 pmI keep telling myself that one week from today is just another birthday, that turning 25 isn't significantly different than turning 24 or 22 (although 23 is significant because I'm not going to be a prime number again until I'm 29).
I think I might be lying to myself. It feels significant. It feels heavy and weird and impossible. I never considered being older than 25, because I don't dwell on the future that much. It's not that I live for today -- it's just that being ADD, plans for the future always get waylaid. Things don't really change when your Big Ideas keep getting put aside for the next bit of shiny. So you stop. You make a reasonable, flexible budget (which you tend to overspend) and hope that your charm and your uncanny ability to rally together a last-minute plan get you through the year.
midnightfae has some sort of awesome (in the classical sense) and complicated Birthday Plan for me. I have no idea what it is and I'm grateful, because surprises are awesome. Plus, she gets me the best presents. She freakin' tracked down a Clone High DVD for me for Christmas in 2005. Clone. High. WIN.
Keep an eye out in the next seven days for the tracklist for my annual birthday mix CD and the semi-annual Top 25 movies update.

*tap* *tap* Is this thing on?
Jan. 25th, 2008 02:32 pmI've been busy as hell (as per usual). I'm still making updates to restore lost data to Classic-Horror. Currently, I'm in the process of readding literally hundreds of makeup and special effects credits that weren't in the backup. This weekend I'm readding the news stories that the people on my f-list so studiously retrieved from the Google cache for me (I am still in awe of you guys).
Meanwhile, I'm researching the hell out of a movie called "Die, Monster, Die!", which is loosely based on HP Lovecraft's "The Colour Out of Space". Or attempting to, anyway. Despite it being a British production, my books on British horror are surprisingly mum on the subject (probably because it's only a British production because the American company behind it, American-International,started producing movies in the UK for the subsidies). This lack of research material lead to a surreal moment with my roommate, who typically has to borrow from my increasingly impressive library of film books when she's writing up a review.
I'm still reeling from that one.
Also, I have a cat! She's a five-year-old blue-point Himalayan. I've named her Vajda (pronounced VIY-dah) after Asa Vajda (played by Barbara Steele) in Mario Bava's Black Sunday. Like her namesake, Vajda is a damaged beauty. She came to stay with us as a foster after a surgical operation to take out her ulcerous right eye. She's adorable, mellow, and purr's louder than anything you've ever heard. I'll have pictures once the stitches come out and she's a little more presentable.
...also, I was just invited to a party tonight. I'm never invited to parties.

Me: (stands with hands on hips by bookshelf) Nothing. None of my books have anything useful. What I wouldn't give for a book on HP Lovecraft in cinema. I think McFarland published one...
Roommate: You mean HP Lovecraft in Popular Culture?
Me: No, I think it was specifically film.
Roommate: Oh. (pause) Because I have the one on popular culture.
Me: What? Really?
Roommate: Yeah. One second. (searches through bookshelves, produces what turns out to be an incredibly informative tome on the subject).
I'm still reeling from that one.

The roommate is planning something extra-special for my birthday. She has told me this much, and that I'm to keep the weekend after my birthday (Feb 22-24) open, but nothing else. She's quite keen to keep it a surprise and I am quite keen to be surprised. That's how birthday presents go. And
midnightfae always comes up with the very best presents.
I also know that she has involved some of my friends in this evil (read: awesome) plot. This she did not tell me. See, my roommate, cunning as she is, doesn't know how to use a Mac. She's been borrowing mine while Dell tries to figure out how to repair her laptop and sometimes she leaves her LJ session logged in.
Like today. I opened up Firefox and there's Livejournal, logged into her account, with the words "No-Nate filter" on the Recent Comments list in large, friendly letters. You've never seen a browser window close so fast. I was practically out of breath from the effort.
I promptly went and taught the roommate how to use Apple Key + Q to completely close a program.
If you're in on the plot, don't let me know anything. Not even a vague hint. Last year, for Christmas, I randomly guessed as a joke that she was giving me Tom Servo. I swear I didn't know she'd been gathering gumball machine heads and spring arms for months (that project is, sadly, not yet complete due to various distractions). I have a terrible knack for working these things out based on ridiculously scant information and I do not want to be ahead of the game.
This has been a public service announcement for the Let's Keep Jetpack Monkey in the Dark Regarding His 25th Birthday Society. We accept generous donations of complete information blackouts and they're tax-deductible. Please, give today.
