So I just read the following bit in A Storm of Swords:

(Catelyn and Robb are at Walder Frey's castle to make amends for Robb's broken word and everything is super tense)

"Catelyn tasted the wine and nibbled at some bread, and felt much the better for it. Now we should be safe, she thought."

Bear in mind that I've never read the books before, but I was already feeling uncomfortable with where this particular plot thread was going. Now my brain is screaming "OH GOD OH GOD YOU'RE ALL DOOMED NOW I WILL CRY FOR YOU."

Edited to add: Yup. I was right. I hate being right.

Oh. Oh god. I am so sorry.

I was in denial when I got to that part. All the signs were there but my brain said no [edit: oops spelling].

Then I rage-quit the book.

That only lasted for two hours.

Yeah. I knew GRRM liked to bring the pain, but he was so good at saying, "Oh hey, you know that pain I bring? There's some more coming up. Can't say what exactly, but you know, look forward. It will involve these characters you like. And you know it's coming because I have written complete, three-dimensional characters and one of them is acting against what you know of him AND if someone were to fuck over these characters royally (as you know I will) this would be the best set-up for it."

This just... it changes everything. And I don't think it's going to change things in ways the Lannisters necessarily expect.

seriously, yeah. I'm not sure what would have been a bigger game changer here that didn't involve at least a whole city being destroyed? or an *entire* family?

I should have known after Ned that he'd really kill anyone, but I so didn't see this coming... I was always weirded out that Rob never had any chapters of his own. I guess I still get a bit sad about this, a year and a half later.

I remember back in book one, when they left Winterfell, wondering how long it would be before all the Stark kids were together again. WHAT A SWEET SUMMER CHILD I WAS.

You'd think Catelyn, who is pretty politically savvy, would have known better.

Alas and woe betide.

She did know better, I think, but for the sake of her son, she chose to ignore it. And that's why the Lannisters remain mostly unsullied by George RR Martin's deadly pen.

Because they are hot even when screwing each other and Tyrion is a BAMF and they will kill anyone who might fuck with them before they can be fucked with.

Er.

Yeah.

Nice people always bite it in GRRM's world.

I have neither read nor watched Game of Thrones (and to be honest, I'm getting kind of tired of hearing about it all the time), but I think you will appreciate Sunday's FoxTrot if you haven't already seen it.
