Please note that I am still recovering from the con plague, so anywhere that lacks coherency is probably due to that.

Then, we move on to Escapade:

I've never felt so competent in my life )

I'm at Escapade now, in what's technically my second year as con staff (apparently I was staff all last Escapade and didn't know it until the end of the weekend).

It's so lovely to see all of these wonderful people and the new faces as well.

I put together a tribute to Leonard Nimoy for a wake we held last night and it went over well. I may post the file later.

As for the request, I need to refuel my music tanks for future vid purposes and I'm having some trouble doing it on my own. Any good bands, albums, or songs that folks can recommend? Doesn't necessarily have to be good vidding music... I just need to start getting into that headspace.

My usual Escapade roomies aren't making it this year and I don't want to be all by myself, for both monetary and social reasons.

Anybody want to bunk with me? I do not snore, will give hugs at the drop of a hat (any hat), and enjoy fannish conversations of many varieties.

I may or may not want to do some Tabletop gaming in the room, but can  move it to alternate venue if that's not in your interest.

Full disclosure: I am a walking mass of privilege, being a white, mostly-heterosexual, cisgender dude. But I'm also aware of this and will correct if any issues that are brought to my attention.

ETA: Speaking of Escapade, how many of you fine folks are going this year?

Have you? It's a great West Coast slash con full of friendly people talking fannish stuff. This year it's at the Four Points Sheraton LAX.

Here's my con report from last year.
jetpack_monkey: (Mac/Vic - Foreplay)
I was interviewed to add a male fannish perspective to an LA Weekly article on slash fiction. I made it very clear to the interviewer that I would be upset if I was anything but a very small voice in the overall article, because the story of slash is not, by and large, a story about dudes. So to speak.

In any case, I was pleased that my part in the article was very small (although I'm a little annoyed that nearly half was taken up by me talking about the rough time I had at my first Escapade -- while true, I feel that my experience was probably an isolated one). However, a huge part of the article was taken up by male showrunners being kind of dickish. Which, you know, sky blue and grass green, news at 11.

Went to a lovely wedding in Georgia over the weekend, but that's another post.

Edited to correct "the first Escapade" to "my first Escapade" because I didn't know what slash fiction was when the first Escapade was happening.

I went into this Escapade a little apprehensive -- I didn't have the best time last year, although there were bright spots. However, I really had nothing to worry about, as it turns out.

I had such an amazing time this year. A lot of it was just from the fact that it was my second year at the con, but there were other factors. I was staying with roommates this year ([personal profile] anoel, [livejournal.com profile] elipie, and [personal profile] kuwdora) who I could hang with. I knew more people. But more importantly, I saw a con that was more open and friendly, even (especially) to the first-timers around us.

In which I talk about the con )
In which I talk about the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me at a con and I still can't believe it actually happened )

I just want to give my thanks to the con organizers who did an amazing job. And I am so pleased that I was able to hang out with such a diverse group of folks. Just a small sampling of some of the people who made my weekend more awesome: Franzeska, Elipie, Kuwdora, Anoel, [personal profile] heresluck, [personal profile] laurashapiro, [personal profile] killabeez, [livejournal.com profile] feochadn, [personal profile] mlyn, [personal profile] melina, [personal profile] kerithwyn, [personal profile] nakedbee, [livejournal.com profile] renenet, [personal profile] amalthia, [personal profile] arallara, everyone who came to my birthday party (and I apologize that I can't name you individually for I was very drunk -- you were all lovely), and everyone who attended the panels I modded (even the one where I didn't show up because I was in the wrong room). There's some other folks with whom I had significant interactions, but I can't remember their names/find their journals, but you are not forgotten. Except for the name part. That I probably did forget.

Who can I expect to see at Escapade this year?

ETA: Also! There are less than 24 hours left to bid at [community profile] fandom_helps ! Wait, more exclamation points: !!!!!! There we go. Bid on a creative fandom type for the benefit of Planned Parenthood.

My offer, for those interested.
