Seriously? This is highest vote-getter on my "Scariest X-Files Episode" poll? Seriously?

I'd hardly call this disturbing.

some people are just so not down with the incest.

I mean, they played aspects of the episode for humor, so it's hard to get too riled up. The original Texas Chain Saw Massacre handled the same material (although substituting cannibalism for incest) better.

I think it got the most votes because EVERYONE knows what episode that is, and it makes an impression.

That's why I voted for it, at least.

It's hard to remember every random X-Files episode.

Yeah, that's a good point. I don't mean to criticize taste, either. The episode is very good, but mostly from a thematic standpoint.

I voted for it because, as Anna said, it made the most lasting impression on me. But if you look at my comment on your poll post, I described it merely as "wrong". For your tastes, I think Hellbound would be much more your speed. In fact, there are probably half a dozen episodes from S9 that would more accurately fit your definition of "scary". A lot of fans left off the show before S9 because of all the casting changes, but there really were a lot of really good, scary episodes that season.

Right now, Irresistible is leading the pack on scary for me, although I haven't rewatched The Host yet.

I agree with many of the above that "Home" isn't so much scary per se as, as [livejournal.com profile] _jealousy_ says, "wrong." Plus, I had just watched it myself for the first time literally days before your poll, so it was stuck in my head. Before watching it, I knew zilch about its notoriety as "The X-Files episode they don't show in re-runs!" I was a sporadic XF watcher when the show was on and am currently going through the entire series on DVD via Netflix very, very slowly.

I can see why it's not scary exactly, especially for someone whose bread and butter is far, far scarier cinematic fare! But since I was totally unprepared for the plot, I guess it was just kind of mildly shocking and gruesome. The incest wasn't even totally the problem. I have kind of a "genetic mutation" squick, I guess.
