jetpack_monkey: (Black Sunday - The Eyes That Paralyze)
I spent almost the entire week watching Community. To give you an idea of how hardcore I was bingeing, I watched all of Season 6 yesterday. The whole thing. I ended up watching only one film (largely because it came to be 10PM Saturday night and I knew I had to make this post the next day).

Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)

This is a neat little thriller with a supernatural angle. Somebody, I forget who, called it an American giallo, and I can see where the comparison might come in, with the violent POV murders and the voyeurism angle. However, it's not stylish in the same way that an Italian giallo might be, although there is plenty of style (the film itself is actually on Criterion Channel as part of their 1970s Style Icons collection). There were only two reasonable suspects for the murders and one was so obvious I discounted it, but the other one didn't make a lot of sense. I won't spoil which one won out, but they did a lot of last minute contortions to make it fit.

So Community is on Netflix now, so that's where most of my attention has been. Never mind that I already own the first three seasons and could have been watching it this entire time.

I haven't left my apartment building in nine days. I'm terrified of getting sick before [personal profile] sol_se can get here. I only go out for the pharmacy and groceries.

I managed slightly more than one movie. I started watching a third, but it didn't catch my attention enough to finish (also Criterion Channel crapped out on me).

Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991)
Eat Local (2019) w/[personal profile] sol_se

I love the original Naked Gun and the sequel is fine.

Eat Local (or Eat Locals as Amazon and IMDb would have it, despite the singular appearing in the film itself and on the poster) is a weird vampire movie that can't settle on a tone. Does it want to be badass, brooding, or the kind of movie where a flaming chicken is launched from an explosion? Hard to tell! I think I liked it? It has Martha Jones, Gwen Cooper, and Daredevil in it!

I had a dream last night that I was convinced, while I was having it, that it would make a fantastic Community spec script. I thought it was totally brilliant. I even had a follow-up dream where I pitched it to Dan Harmon and he thought it was great and told me to write it.

Unfortunately, after I woke up, I couldn't recall most of the funny bits, just the basic premise and some of the key dramatic moments. Sadly, those key dramatic moments hinged on the presence of Community characters that only existed in my dream -- me, Captain America, and [personal profile] franzeska . Although there was one funny exchange with Dean Pelton and Abed that I can still remember and like a lot.

The dream episode centered around a Greendale soccer and/or ice hockey game (it didn't switch back and forth in the dream -- rather, I had the dream once and went back and made a revision and had it again. It played very differently -- when I was forward playing soccer, we lost, but when I wasn't playing ice hockey and Captain America was forward (or whatever) we won, but disaster struck. Jeff Winger was goalie in both versions. Half the episode took place in the bleacher with various interpersonal subplots that I can't actually recall (just that at one point I realized that I'd totally neglected to put Pierce in and Andre was jealous because he thought Shirley was flirting with another man, but really she was just being friendly with a preacher because she was thinking of switching to his church).

Also I have no Community icons. This is sad.

I'll Be OK by [personal profile] leanwellback

I keep watching this vid like my personal sense of well-being depends on it and I can't seem to stop. No, I don't want to stop. It basically encapsulates everything I love about Community that's beneath the wackiness (although the vid has wackiness as well): it's about slightly (or entirely) broken people coming together and figuring out their lives.

I need to get the hell through the rest of Season 1 and then watch Season 2 and 3 so I can appreciate this vid *more*.
