My Week in Movies: November 24 - 30

I spent a lot of time in airports and on airplanes this week, so most of what I watched was what I had available on my iTunes account (and most of that was material for various vids both made and unmade).

I also watched about half of Rango (2011) before the family Thanksgiving festivities interrupted.

Hearing Vincent Price ham it up in The Great Mouse Detective was possibly a factor in getting Disney+. I was not disappointed.

Stoker is Very Good -- properly twisty and twisted. Plus, I love any riff on Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is less good, but I give it a pass because its aesthetic is very much my thing.

I love George of the Jungle with all of my heart and it never ceases to be a funny, delightful film.

I'm confused by the naming convention on Once Upon a Time in the West. There isn't a fairy tale element in the movie. It's a very good Western, but I don't see how the title is relevant to it. Henry Fonda should not be so good at being so bad. I dig it.

It's been a while since I've seen Once Upon A Time In The West in its entirety, so I can't really comment on the fairy tale element. However, according to wikipedia the Ialian title would literally translate to "once upon a time there was the west". So maybe it's referring to the times that are changing. I think there was something about the railroad coming through and deals being made and the end of the "west" as the era of legends.

As a sidenote the German title is "Play the song of death for me" and that's the sentence Frank says to Harmonica instead of "keep your loving brother happy". Because of that I (and most Germans) thought that it was Harmonica's father who had been killed.

I still need to watch Sky Captain for Angelina reasons.

On the basis of Stoker I have actually no idea why Park Chan-Wook hasn't been tapped to do all the Shirley Jackson adaptations, ever. SUCH a sensibility on display.
