Just a quick note here to say that I saw this last night and I feel so understood by Guillermo del Toro.

I can't say it's the best movie I've seen recently, but it's definitely the most Me movie I've seen in a long time.

Did you see his Golden Globes acceptance speech? IDK if it's on YouTube yet, but I think he says things you would appreciate.

Ach, envy. If I still lived near the cheap theatre I'd probably be closing in on my Crimson Peak record of six viewings in a month before a big overmarketed blockbuster took over all the screens, but here it was playing for two weeks over Christmas at the tiny irritating art theatre that always lets out after the last bus.

It's a beautiful film, aesthetically gorgeous. I like both the Little Mermaid resonances and the way water is used thematically throughout. A "well-made play" with a consistent spine.

Which character are you identifying with?
