I've fallen deep down the hole that is Magic: The Gathering. How deep? I actually went out and did a social thing with strangers on Friday and played the weekly Friday Night Magic tourney at a local game shop. Social anxiety be damned.

I am... kind of terrible, but I did win one round! And I learned what was wrong with my deck. Although, honestly, I may have overcompensated in fixing the deck. I dunno.

Anyway, anybody here play the game?

God, I haven't played Magic since -- this is dating me, I feel certain -- 1995 or 1996. Back before it was the phenomenon it is today. My housemates (I was living in a group house with a bunch of college friends) included some Magic players and for a very short while I had a deck of my own. But then other obsessions prevailed. I have no idea where the game has gone in the last many years.

But yay! I'm glad you're having fun.

My spouse plays it online still I think, but hasn't played with actual cards in years.

Ditto what [personal profile] kass said. I had a group that played rabidly in the 94-97 era, but interest waned (mainly because of a couple of people who made it unfun to play).

My husband and I are still missing boxes of cards from our last move 12 years ago. *sigh*

I've played it on and off for about half my life, though it's been a few years since it was a regular part of my social life. I did spend a while a few years ago playing casual tournaments, though (I never entered the competitive ones, just...not fun). I got to be reasonably good. Like I'd come top third. But I was never willing to put the time, or more realistically the money that you need to in to make the savage, killer decks. That's why I ultimately lost interest. The power creep factor. You make a wonderful, fun, interesting deck with an unusual strategy, but it gets torn apart because you're playing someone whose entire deck is designed to take you out in five turns. You end up having to keep up because the power creep from set to set means that your older cards are no longer able to keep up... That sort of thing. You can play it casually and it's fun, but inevitably I end up reaching that point where it's not fun anymore and I step back for a few years. Until something pulls me back in. ;)

The initial high of finding it, though, I very much get.

Have a great time!

I was obsessed in college and then re-discovered my love briefly at PAX East a few years ago. SO I have a bunch of cards but don't have your bravery to go play with strangers and thus have nobody to play with. So it's a latent obsession. :)

Ah, you must have met my husband, then. Although I'm not sure how down the hole you are. He fell in about six months ago and, um, I haven't seen him since? Or something. Enjoy!
