jetpack_monkey: (Naked Lunch - Writing on the Brain)

The following instructions are kind of untested. I'm using them to submit my vid for [personal profile] absolutedestiny 's themed vidshow this year. We'll see how well it works.

These instructions require the purchase of Compressor, which is an extra $50, but is also the only way to really tweak your export options manually. The program is mostly just a settings generator if you're not running a server farm.

Also, by default, these instructions will only work with NTSC projects. I do not know how well they will work with projects with PAL framerates or dimensions.

Prep: Adding the output presets to Final Cut Pro X (do this once and never again I hope)
1. In the "File" menu, select "Share" > "Add Destination"
2. Click "Add Destination" in the list on the left.
3. Drag the "New Bundle" icon to the list on the left. This will create a folder named "Bundle".
4. If you know the slow double-click trick for renaming files/folders on a Mac, rename "Bundle" to something like "Vividcon". If not, no worries.
5. Drag the "Compressor Settings" icon into your new bundle in the left menu. A window with options will pop-up.
6. Under the "Apple" > "Disc Burning" folder, select "MPEG-2 for DVD" and click the "OK" button.
7. Repeat Step 5.
8. Under the "Apple" > "Audio Formats" folder, select "WAVE File" and click the "OK" button.
9. Close the Preferences window.

Note that the steps regarding creating the bundle are optional. You can add the MPEG-2 and WAVE options separately. But as a bundle, both files will export at the same time.

Export the vid
1. Make sure your project is selected by clicking on any blank spot on the timeline
2. In the "File" menu, select "Share" > "Bundle" (or "Vividcon" or whatever if you renamed it)
3. Click "Next" on the window that comes up.
4. Usual save stuff: choose a folder to save it to, pick a file name, click "Save".

Note that FCP X will end up attaching the Preset name to the end of whatever file name you choose, so don't worry about naming it properly now. You're just going to have to rename it before upload.

Also widescreen vids will be anamorphic. I know there's some debate on whether or not to just submit the anamorphic 16:9 vid or black-bar it to 4:3.

There's a known issue with this workflow regarding the .wav file. Despite the fact that Compressor says that the file will have a 16-bit depth, it will have 24, which makes the Vividcon file tester sad. I'm not sure how important that is.

There's a way to create a custom preset with the proper bit-depth in Compressor by copying the existing WAVE file settings and doing a quick settings tweak, but I don't have the brainspace to write that up, since Compressor is a much more complex program to use and describe.

Obviously, Llamaenc is an available tool and I encourage its use (especially for widescreen vids for Premieres).

I'm just presenting an alternative (although I think I'm the only Vividcon vidder working out of Final Cut Pro X at the moment)

Thank you so much -- I'm using FCP X too, and this is super-helpful! <3
