Look at you, Festividder. In the last week or two, you said to yourself, "Hey, I want to make something awesome for somebody (possibly a total stranger) who shares my interests!" Alternately, you said, "Hey, I want to try to challenge myself to make a vid to spec, thus broadening my horizons and/or forcing me to vid when I might not otherwise."

In both of the above scenarios, I salute you. You just plain rock and I'm so delighted that you're making something for me! Since you've probably matched on something that you're interested in vidding, you're probably also making something that you'll enjoy, which will make it all the better.

My general tastes run to dorky fun vids, bouncy dance-able vids, and contemplations of genre. Seriously, I'm obsessed with genre, its tropes, boundaries, and the way we use genre as a shorthand, sometimes to tell very unexpected stories.  My requests mostly focus on the first two types of vids, but if you could sneak in type 3 (contemplations of genre), I would be in awe of you.

I didn't make a lot of specific music requests, because picking music is probably the hardest part of vidding for me. That said, my musical tastes are all over the place -- punk, New Wave, 80s rap (Public Enemy, Run-DMC, etc), rock, folk, folk-rock, post-apocalyptic folk-punk (Stuart Davis fans, where are you?), showtunes, comedy (Tom Lehrer, Jonathan Coulton), geek rock, metal (not black metal), 90s pop, 60s pop, bluegrass (not country), mashups, ska.

That said, I discover most new music and artists through vids, so feel free to open my eyes to something!

Now, onto my requests! I have a good mix of the old and the new. All of the additional details are so completely optional -- if you make a vid in any of these fandoms, you will make me a very happy monkey-with-a-jetpack.

Babylon 5

Music: Vidder's choice.

Original Request: Lennier will kick your ass so hard. That's it. Lennier. Kicking ass. Being awesome.

Additional Details: Or Vir Cotto! I love Vir. Vir and Lennier. Wow, hey, there could be a vid of them together. That would be cool, too. Assistants have the worst kind of crap to deal with.

Eureka

Music: Nerdcore or nerd rock or something? Vidder's choice, really.

Original Request: Fargo. Specifically his face. There's an entire vid in his ridiculous face and your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make that vid.

Additional Details: I only recently started watching Eureka as a serious fan. Fargo is my main draw there. Well, him and watching crap get dumped on Sheriff Carter.

Frankenstein (Universal series, 1931 - 1948)

Music: Vidder's choice.

Original Request: Boris Karloff is tied with Peter Cushing for my favorite actor of all time. Something focused on his rendition of the monster in the first three films would be *excellent*. Or, if you want to get more expansive, something on how the monster can't catch a break. Ever. Or just general mad science. I love these films so much.

Additional Thoughts:  James Whale's Frankenstein is probably my favorite horror movie of all time. There's a lovely, tragic arc to it. I'm less fond of Bride of Frankenstein, although that's like saying I like chocolate but I'm less fond of dark chocolate. I love both. The monster gets used less effectively starting with Son of Frankenstein and going through to the end of the series. Even then, there's a lot of tropes and visuals that recur that I love. I love the whirling Strickfaden gadgets, the Monster's reaction to fire, and mad scientists with the light of discovery in their eyes.

Lawrence of Arabia

Original Request: Mr. Lawrence and His Sense of White Privilege. Lawrence thinks he's all that and a bag of potato chips, but his bag
is empty and crumby. For being so smart, he's incredibly dumb.

Additional Details: This is one freakin' beautiful film. It's also very complex and more than a little problematic. The music request is a vidbunny I had for the movie that I'll never do, but if you want to change it up to something entirely different, I leave that to you.

Martin (1977) (safety)

Music: Ben Folds or someone like him.

Original Request: Martin's emo moppet existence. Being a vampire (or a serial killer) is HARD (he's kind of what Edward Cullen would be if he were real). Dealing with the dichotomy of his character would also be an excellent and much loved approach.

Additional Thoughts: George A. Romero made a lot of interesting films in the gap between Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, but only one masterpiece. This is that masterpiece. It's a film that lives in the cracks of genre. Sure it's horror film, but isn't it really a psycho drama? Maybe it's a serial killer thriller! Or maybe it's all of those things and none of those things. I really love this movie and if there was a vid made of it, I might squee a lot.

Phantasm series (1979 - 1998)

Music: Hard rock. Or folk-rock.

Original Request: So the Phantasm series is basically a series of movies about an apocalypse, but done with the standard tropes of the horror film. It's kind of nutty. I'd like a vid focused on that apocalypse. Or just The Tall Man. Either/or.

Additional Thoughts: This series is a little tricky to vid because studio meddling replaced the actor who played the protagonist for the second film. The original actor was reinstated for films 3 and 4, but he was visibly much, much older. That said, if you can make it work? That would rock. It's a weird-ass film series and deserves some love for being weird-ass.

The Prisoner (1967)

Music: For some reason Radiohead springs to mind, but I leave it up to you.

Original Request: Number 6 is paranoid, obstinate, or crazy. If you can combine all three (especially the third) into one vid, I would be so happy. Number 6 is one of my very favorite characters in television, because he has a singularity of vision that's going up against a monolith that changes its face every day.

Additional Thoughts: The Prisoner is probably my favorite television show of all time, if only because I have no idea how Patrick McGoohan managed to merge brilliant, crazy, and awesome into one perfect package. Anything you vid from this show will make me so happy.

It's very, very difficult to make a vid that isn't 6-centric, because the show was so wholly centered around him. That said, it would be interesting to look at how the trappings of the spy genre were used for a very different sort of purpose. I suggested Radiohead only because the show has an intricate and smart vibe and  I, uh, am not familiar with a lot of intricate and smart music. Then again, it also has a silly, what-the-fuck vibe. You may want to plumb those depths instead. Up to you!

There we go. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
