Quick Note from 100 Pages into "Memory" (no spoilers)

Someday, I'm going to write an essay titled "Miles Vorkosigan and the Longshot Effect." I swear to God, the guy has the most amazing luck so long as his intentions are pure and the worst luck when he's selfish. It's almost supernatural.

I'd argue he has fairly rotten luck, period. He has a moral subconscious that means that he cannot (well, will not but same difference) bring his considerable skill and charisma to bear on changing circumstances when he's being selfish.

Because on some level he knows it. And he subconsciously refuses to actually being awesome -- which means that his shitty luck really bites him in the ass.
