I have about 24 dollars worth of iTunes credit and I have no idea how to spend it.

So! Recommend me new artists and sounds!

I like Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Stuart Davis, Oingo Boingo, Talking Heads, Monty Python, songs that are very witty, Jonathan Coulton, musicals, Tom Lehrer, REM, Tears for Fears, They Might Be Giants, The Smiths, The Clash, OK Go, The Eurhythmics, Frank Zappa, Goblin, Green Day, a capella groups, Ben Folds, and Barenaked Ladies prior to Maroon.

Suggestions?

"The Pointless, Yet Poignant, Crisis of a Co-Ed" - Dar Williams.

I don't know if they've got any Say Hi to Your Mom, but "I'm in Love With An Android" is good, as is "As Smart as Geek is Chic Right Now".

I'd also suggest "Art Snob Solutions" by Of Montreal.

Not my favorite by Dar Williams. At all.

I mean, I like it, but if I had to pick only a few of her songs, I'd not pick that one.

I wouldn't hold it up as my favorite, either. "Art Snob Solutions" and "I'm in Love With an Android" aren't my favorite Of Montreal or Say Hi To Your Mom songs, either. Those reccs are entirely based on Nate's assertion that he likes "songs that are witty".

*nods*

I think I may just solve Nate's dilemma and buy the mp3 albums for The Honesty Room and Mortal City.

I had her complete collection up to Beauty of the Rain... and then some jerk stole all my CDs. I'm still missing those (and the complete Tori Amos collection, including singles, and the complete Sarah McLachlan) like crazy.

Ouch! I gotta say, some of the only Tori tracks I still listen to regularly are from her singles. I especially love her cover of "Take to the Skies".

"Let's Go to the Mall" is a mere .99 on iTunes.

I am just saying.

Songs I would like to listen to while driving (by Dar Williams):

Iowa
Southern California Wants to be Western New York
The Blessings
The Ocean
Travelling Again
When I Was a Boy
Flinty Kind of Woman

Also, as general good songs, but depressing and bad for driving:
February
This Was Pompeii
The Great Unknown
In Love But Not At Peace
I Love, I Love

And that's just off her two favorite albums. If you poke around, the stuff off The Green World, Beauty of the Rain and End of Summer are very good. I haven't heard her new one though.

If I ever find who stole my CDs, I will beat them to death with a noodle.

Da Vinci's Notebook (if iTunes has them) -- witty and a capella. Enormous Penis, Internet Porn, and Another Irish Drinking song are favorites, but Title of The Song is an absolute *must* have. (Most of those are on their Brontosaurus album, I think.)

Hey, remember that time when I visited you guys in LA and [livejournal.com profile] lizbetann burned me a CD by this group... oh what was there name... oh yes, Da Vinci's Notebook. I think the album was named after a dinosaur.

Are they, like, along the same lines? *G*

How have you lived this long without tons and tons and TONS of Blondie? Seriously.

Look for old stuff. Most underrated album is Plastic Letters. I know iTunes has it. The greatest song ever is "Fan Mail," if nothing else.
