That's how I do mine as well. First DVDs, in alphabetical order, then VHS, also in alphabetical order. Then, on a separate shelf are all Disney/Clamshell Cases in alphabetical order. And then on ANOTHER separate shelf are all "Taped off TV" videos, in order of genre/frequency I watch them
I am a teeeeeeeeeeeeeensy bit anal about them all being exactly where they are supposed to be, too. I flip out if something gets put in the wrong spot.
I keep my "taped off TV" videos in a giant bureau upon which sits my TV, VCR, and DVD players (of which I actually have two, but that's a whole 'nother story). And I, too, get anal if they get out of order. ;)
By director, then by year of release, for any director you have more than a couple of DVDs by, and then by genre, alphabetically within each genre, for remaining DVDs, if there are enough to bother with doing this to.
I used to have mine sorted out similar to this, though I just re-sorted mine into "need to watch, haven't seen in forever" and "everything else just alphabetized" to try to encourage me to stop just watching the same DVDs over and over. Hah! Like that'll work.
