What if Mr. Saxon is not The Master, but is in fact, The Valeyard. "You are not alone" would only be half-correct, since The Valeyard *is* The Doctor. Sort of. He's a manifestation of The Doctor's dark side that exists as a conduit between his 12th and 13th forms.

It's certainly an interesting thought.

My dark horse vote is that Saxon is Turlough.

Oo, neat! I like that. Personally, I think he probably is the Master, but it'd sure surprise the heck out of people if he isn't! :)

I really do think it's The Master. I mean, The Valeyard would be neat, but you say The Valeyard and half your audience goes "Who?" If you say "The Master" and only one seventh goes "Who?"

Plus, explanations for those not in the know are easier.

Martha: "Who's The Master?"
The Doctor: "Oh, he's an evil Time Lord. School chum of mine."

--or--

Martha: "Who's The Valeyard?"
The Doctor: "Oh, he's an evil version of me from between my regenerations. I'm not even sure how that works."

Given the guy's given name is Harold Saxon, one is very much inclined to wonder about the Meddling Monk, a Time Lord from the First Doctor's era who first turned up trying to stop the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

If it weren't for the entirely idiotic appearance of the Macra in Gridlock (why not just "crab monsters"?) then I'd say that was going a bit obscure... but apparently RTD thinks the more weird and obscure he can go, the more clever he is.

I also know that RTD has laughingly admitted that he's thrown one piece of information into the series this year just to screw around with the real geeks/fan-boys (ie the Outpost Galifrey mob). I'm fairly sure that this would be it.

And hey! I liked the Macra reference! Just wait for the Ice Warriors now.

I want the Sontarans to show up. Potato-headed menaces.

I'm sticking with the anagram theory (cuz Torchwood):

Saxon = Axons (buddies of The Master)

--OR--

Mister Saxon = Master No. Six (the first being far more likely)

Still, I do like The Valeyard theory, mostly because Michael Jayston FTW.
