My review for Grindhouse is gonna be a doozy, I can tell you already. But first, sleep. Then we write!

FYI, if you go see Grindhouse, watch Planet Terror, then the fake trailers. Then leave. You'll be better off without Tarantino's segment. Trust me.

If only we could, like, tell people to sneak out of the theater and come back for the last ten minutes of Death Proof

*wakes up a bit more*

Wait. I rescind that statement.

Because I distinctly remember walking away from the film thinking Tarantino's segment was the superior of the two. Not the one I enjoyed more, mind you (because I have a soft spot for any movie with Tom Savini, now, apparently), but... it seemed to just be executed with much more simplicity. I'll admit, it never felt like the 'slasher' film Tarantino attempted to tout it as, and viewed in that light it could be seen as a failure.

Indeed, I think Death Proof's huge change of pace from Planet Terror may be it's biggest downfall. It's definitely slower, building towards that end payoff (Which I still think is a damn good payoff), and at a late showing, I can see this being an even bigger problem (I saw Grindhouse, like, first thing after lunch, yesterday).

Tarantino's segment bored the crap out of me. Instead of making a horror film filtered through a Tarantino movie, he made a Tarantino movie with some horror film sloppily grafted on. This wouldn't be a problem, if it weren't for the fact that it was the most banal Tarantino film ever. Just completely worthless. I kept shaking my head throughout and asking "What is this shit?"

I can actually agree with a lot of that assessment, actually. I think somehow I reveled in the fact that there was no point to all of it. And really, the more I attempt to analyze why I enjoyed it, the more I see the haphazard flaws inherent in the film. So, hmmm. Perhaps my impression was merely that. An impression, but not backed up by substance.

Yeah, but isn't that the beauty of the exploitation cinema experience? Impressions backed up by no substance? I say go with it.
