In honor of Grindhouse opening today, I declare this post open to talking about your very favorite bad/cult/weird movies of all time. I'm not talking big-budget studio product, I'm talking low-budget independent trash, here (think Sci-Fi Channel Movie of the Week for a modern antecedent).

Some of my favorite low-budget bad/cult/weird films of all time (limiting myself to one per director):

Asylum of Satan
Basket Case
The Beyond
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Blood for Dracula (AKA Andy Warhol's Dracula)
Blood Freak
Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter
Dawn of the Dead '78
The Diabolical Dr. Z
The Howling
It's Alive
Plan 9 from Outer Space
Re-Animator
The Road Warrior
Sleepaway Camp
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
The Toxic Avenger

What are some of your favorites?

I have a bad feeling that the Mormon-funded version of Pride and Prejudice is not what you have in mind.

Not so much. I'm talkin' sex, violence, and bad taste. Two out of three required, with an emphasis on bad taste.

Well, we've got Bad Taste aplenty... and did you see Lydia. She's a scrappy bitch.

Otherwise, my vote goes to Bad Taste. And Return of the Living Dead.

Psycho Beach Party for sure. Rocky Horror Picture Show. It totally counts! Librarian: The Quest for the Spear. Things to Come (1936). I don't know if there are any remakes, but I like that one. 28 Days Later.

Rocky Horror might count, but I don't really see LibrarinL TQftS as a grindhouse film...

I take that back. I do, and the audience in my head is terrifying and wonderful at the same time.

I third Psycho Beach Party and second the Toxic Avenger (and, well, just about anything I've seen from the Troma people).

These aren't bloody, but also Hairspray (pre-musical and musical movie whose casting makes me WTF) and Cry-baby.

Liquid Sky. Hands down. Androgynous aliens who are obsessed with David Bowie! Bad special effects and '70s electronica! What's not to love?

Oh, and for weirdness on the other side of the pond, the British film Jubilee is pretentious punk grindhouse. With twins who have sex with each other, Queen Elizabeth I being shown a vision of post-apocalpytic England by a mysterious psuedo-fairy creature, and people who cut each other on purpose. Very awesome and totally sick.
