My Week in Movies: March 8 - 14
Mar. 15th, 2020 01:42 pmYou would think, being in social isolation mode, I would've watched more movies this week. However, I did a lot of anxious Twitter refreshing for the most part.
Everything this week except the last film comes courtesy Criterion Channel, which I think is really going to save my sanity in the coming months.
3:10 to Yuma (1957)
Orlando (1992)
Until the End of the World (1991)
Gilda (1946)
Sweetheart (2019) w/

I'm fascinated by the Western as an exercise in genre theory, but less so for actually being a fan of Westerns. Still, 3:10 to Yuma is good and puts me in mind of High Noon, but with more of a psychological bent to it.
Orlando is weird. I enjoyed it and Tilda Swinton is marvelous, but I'm still not 100% sure of what I make of it.
Until the End of the World is... nearly five hours long. It has no right being that long, especially when that last hour switches tracks entirely to destroying the characters and relationships established thus far. It's a beautiful film, though. I'd be interested to see the 150 minute cut.
I've been wanting to see Gilda for ages, especially based on a image I saw from it that was formative for me as a budding film fan. I discovered, however, that the image was a publicity still and does not feature in the movie itself. Disappointed! Still, it's an atypical film noir with a great cast, deep shadows, and an ending that makes you go, "Really?"
Sweetheart is outside of the norm of what
sol_se and I normally watch on our Saturday movie dates, inasmuch as it is a good film that I can actually recommend. It's about a woman stranded on a desert island with ... something.
