Check out Ebert's review for Superman Returns (link goes to website's frontpage, as review contains spoilers). It's like he saw a completely different film. Joyless? Lacking charisma? I can't imagine anyone seeing anything like that in this film.
Ebert's the same guy who wrote a very negative review of the first Spider-Man movie with the central complaint (and when I say "central complaint" I mean "it's the only thing he actually talked about") being that Spider-Man defied the laws of physics.
When it comes to superhero movies, it's best not to pay any attention to what Ebert says.
I suppose. Usually his reviews are fun reads and well-reasoned. This? I don't want to suggest he was anything but completely alert, but... I really don't get it.
I generally enjoy his reviews as well - especially during the summer movie season since he understands the appeal of popcorn movies - but he has a strange history of completely missing the mark on superhero movies.
