They blocked off my usual route to/from work a few weeks back to do some construction on the local convention center, so I've been taking a different (and actually speedier) way. It takes me through the Arizona Center, one of those outdoor malls that rarely have things of interest to geeks like myself. Important to the story, however, is that the Arizona Center also houses the AMC Arizona Center 24 multiplex. I glance at the Now Showing board whenever I pass, considering the various options presented in cheerfully sinister red LEDs. There's never anything worthwhile -- I gave up on modern cinema long ago.

However, today I found something that made me pause. SUPERMAN R - 10:00. It sounded like an anime sequel series, but my clever frontal lobe deduced that this must be that new film Superman Returns directed by Bryan Singer and starring some guy from Iowa (Iowans always track those who escaped and became famous -- it gives us hope).

"Say," I said to myself (remarkably the conversation was restrained inside my head -- these things usually become performance pieces). "Isn't that coming out tomorrow?"

"Yes," I replied, cheery enough to put me on edge. "It is. You would be a very special boy if you were to see it early."

"But I have no assurance of transportation there and back," I countered, sullen and spiteful.

"If you think about it, you could buy two tickets and wave them enticingly at someone. Say, for instance, your girlfriend."

"Oh," I said. I hadn't thought of that. "I hadn't thought of that."

"That's why you have me," I beamed. "You're a schmuck."

With that, I sallied forth, purchased two tickets whilst simultaneously flirting with the ticket girl (an incident I've only just gotten around to informing myself of), and prepared to take a loss on two tickets to the superhero event of the summer. Excepting, of course, those other superhero events of the summer. They might be equally eventful.

If you're looking for a point to my story, it's this. I have tickets to see Superman Returns at 10. I may not be going, but I have the tickets.

Seeing as the most famous Wisconsinites include Ed Gein, Jeffrey Dahmer, and Joseph McCarthy, we tend to hope we won't produce any more famous people. ;)

Maybe it's something in the (Wisconsin-related stereotype here).

Besides, we produced Herbert Hoover. Okay, not a serial killer, but grade-A asshole president.

Hee! Oh, how amusing you are. ;-)

I still contend that it's not MPD if both parts get along amicably most of the time.

You remind me of Dresden in conversations with himself.

That kind of rules.

I have not read these Dresden novels. I assume I must at some juncture.

Oh, good grief, you MUST. They're very, very good, and Jim Butcher reminds me of the urban fantasy writer version of Kevin Smith in person. He's a total geek. I love him.

And how did they have an early showing anyway, you lucky dog?

There were a bunch of "not-really-midnight-showings" across the globe last night. Also, it might have been a simultaneous release paradigm like they did with X2 -- the movie opens at the exact same moment everywhere in the world. I'm not sure, but it does mean I could do the 10 PM showing, which rocked.

Also, sure. The whole Dresden thing sounds neat.

Dammit, I need Superman icons.

OH, doy, I forgot that the midnight-ish things were happening. I did see some mention of that somewhere. We're going to an iMax showing as soon as possible.

Jim Butcher is love. Dresden series v. good, much better IMO than his fantasy series. Do NOT watch the Sci-Fi Channel TV version of Dresden 'til you read at least one of the books, though.

I just want Lex Luthor icons. ;)

But his other fantasy series is also very good! Just... very different from Dresden. *G*

It is an absolute requirement. I shall force you to buy at least the first one at Con if you haven't already,. ;)

Of course, by force I mean "beg and plead."

And how can I resist the pleas of a puppy-eyed Rachel? It can't be done!
