I swear somebody jammed a film lecturer in my brain at some point and didn't tell me.

I've been educating [livejournal.com profile] midnightfae on classic cinema, based on the fact that I was talking about Cary Grant the other night and she stared at me blankly. I made it my mission to teach her and teach her well about classic cinema.

Session 1 comprised of His Girl Friday (Hawks, 1940) and North by Northwest (Hitchcock, 1959). She enjoyed both, although I think the screwball comedies are more up her alley, which lead to Session 2.

Session 2, last night, started out with My Man Godfrey (La Cava, 1936), which [livejournal.com profile] midnightfae appeared to enjoy a great deal. I randomly spouted interesting facts about Carole Lombard, and we followed up with Nothing Sacred (Wellman, 1937) which I had forgotten isn't that good. We abandoned it halfway through and segued into darker humor with The Invisible Man (Whale, 1933), which may have broken the poor girl's brain. I started really going in on the history of this film quite a deal. I probably needed to shut up, but I'm so very impressed with myself some days.

Anyway, I'm weighing possibilities for the next session. She doesn't know who Humphrey Bogart is, either. I'm thinking Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon.

Director's cut The Big Sleep!

Ahem. The other two are awesome, too.

I might, but I just just just watched The Big Sleep for the first time ever and I'm still trying to work out the plot.

Which version did you watch? Thanks to the magic of DVD, there's the confusing one that was released back in the day, and then there's the one that had the restored scenes missing that was a little clearer. Been a loooooong time since I saw it. Must put it on Netflix.

Anyway, how can you not love Becall in that movie?

I watched the original theatrical release. I'm planning on giving the pre-release a whirl eventually.

And how can you not love Bacall in any movie?

Exactly.

And just keep your eyes on Phillip Marlowe, he'll keep telling you who's dead and who killed them, if you can take notes on who those people are.

Oh, Maltese Falcon, definitely. That's one of my favorites.

First, I maintain that my so-called blank stare was actually a carefully crafted and convincing "knowing look" that would have sustained me if I hadn't been forced to respond verbally.

Second, there was no brain breaking. My brain does not break, as previously discussed, and, further, there were not even any brain contortions. Its just that people you can't see are mildly creepy. Alright, very creepy.

And, finally, why do I suddenly feel like a show-and-tell school project. ;P

Back to work! Whee!

Er, sorry. Read that over again and yeah... it does kind of read funky. Sorry!

I really loved My Man Godfrey when I saw it as a young tyke.

REALLY loved.

As in one spring I bought a "pet" marigold...and named it Godfrey. Yes, that's just awful. I know.

*Adores His Girl Friday* In spite of the fact that her husband is a bastard. Relaly. He's so fun, I almost don't care.

Go with Casablanca first. Falcon drags in places, and keeping track of the players is a bitch. How can she *not* know who Humphrey Bogart is? Dude.
