The Undiscoverd Country is not nearly as good as I remember it being. [livejournal.com profile] desertwillow came over so we could finish it (we started Saturday night, but she got a headache and went home).

Wow. Chekov is a dumbshit. "Dur, I don't know why you can't fire a phaser on a Starfleet wessel." He's the one panicking and wonder WTF they're going to do, and he's the one who's entirely smug when he has information that somebody had to feed him earlier. My GOD, man, you have the rank of Commander! Did you get by on the Captain Kirk Scholarship for Dumbshit Cronies?

And why do all these Klingons feel it necessary to quote Shakespeare? The Klingons I know wouldn't be lowered to expressing themselves in the words of a human writer. They'd be quoting a Klingon sage, who talked about the blood of martyrs and how the most honorable thing to do when your friends screw you over is to skewer them.

Still, enjoyable just to watch that geriatric bunch bringing it together at the end. One of the highest ranking crews in Starfleet, and probably the oldest at the same time. You get 'em, you beautiful bunch of geezers.

Also watched some Trigun for the first time. Suffers from one of my main problems with anime, which is a seeming inconsistency of characterization for the sake of a laugh. Vash, for instance, is a cool-headed peace-loving gunman, until it suits the plot for him to be a total spaz.

Otherwise, it was pretty cool. [livejournal.com profile] desertwillow will probably be foisting more on me, and I certainly don't mind. Wolfwood rocks me, fer instance.

I thought it was just the one Klingon captain that did that? In any case, that really didn't bother me so much, since it gave us the great line, "You haven't experienced Shakespeare until you've read him in the original Klingon version."

As for Trigun, I thought it was okay. IMO, the big problem with it is that the first half is pretty silly and mostly played for laughs, and the second half is dead serious and played pretty much completely straight. The transition is... jarring, to say the least.

Have you seen Cowboy Bebop? Now THAT is some quality anime.

Both Chang and Chancellor Gorkon are given to quoting Shakespeare. It's rather bothersome, although that one line is pretty cool.

I've seen Cowboy Bebop. I liked it well enough.

Thankfully, the Klingon habit of quoting Shakespeare seems limited to The Original Series. For later series, the writers were much better about building up the Klingon culture and giving them their own writers/poets/bad opera.

Yes, Chekov is a dumb shit. But since he was hired for his hair, I can't really blame him.

And anyway, Wrath of Khan is so much better. Though my personal favorite is Voyage Home, because of the parking joke and the Monterey Bay Aquarium that I love to point out that I've been to everytime I watch the movie.

Oh, Wrath of Khan is far and away my favorite. "KHAAAAAAAN!" But I do love Voyage Home like a baby sister. Mm. Too much LDS in the 60s indeed.

I LOATHE "The Voyage Home".

Probably because I saw it on a disasterously bad blind date.

But that said, "Khan" is the best of them all.

Crev! So good to see you skulking about my journal.

Yeah, Khan's definitely the best, especially because of the fine Corinthian leather.
