Two Musicals
Jul. 18th, 2008 10:58 pmMamma Mia! - Looooved the first half. Full of vim, vigor, wit, and wonder. Lots of great numbers, tons of fun. And then right around what I can only assume is intermission in the stage play, the thing deflates like a big deflating thing. Pierce Brosnan cannot sing and yet they keep giving him numbers. Meryl Streep kept getting stuck with these slow, melancholy songs with static visuals. The whole thing picks up at the end (and omg stay through the credits), but it's not quite enough to reinvigorate the whole film.
But Julie Walters and Christine Baranski (especially Walters) are made of utter awesome.
Dr. Horrible Act III (link) - I liked it. By liked it, I mean "was utterly depressed by it" but it reminded me a lot of Sweeney Todd without the horror and I kind of dug that. I do feel like Joss needed another Act or something to make the whole thing cohese better, but overall, I give it thumbs up. Two thumbs. Very sad ones.
