My Week in Movies: September 8 - 14
Sep. 15th, 2019 02:34 pmI spent a lot of the week watching Power of the Dark Crystal instead of watching movies, then Borderlands 3 came out. So there's only two films this week (both on Criterion Channel):
La Grande Illusion (1937)
Wuthering Heights (1939)
I'm not sure what I expected out of La Grande Illusion, but it was not this. It's a breakdown of class and social differences among French officers trying to escape German POW prisons during World War I. I liked it, but not nearly as much as Renoir's later film The Rules of the Game.
I have very little contact with Brontë. I know the broad strokes of Jane Eyre and that Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights is something of a dick. I had no idea just how messed up his whole deal with Cathy really is. That's some weird co-dependent love/hate society stuff going on there. It makes me intrigued to possibly read the book, actually, especially since I learned that the film drops a whole section of the plot.
