For the Comic-Con n00bs and those who want to be Comic-Con n00bs. Brilliant, funny, and so true.

There's a fourteen-step guide to getting drunk during Con weekend. What more do you need?

Sidenote: A guide to getting drunk with [livejournal.com profile] quantum_gazebo at Comic-Con.

1. Order me an alcoholic cider.
2. Watch me nurse the cider over the course of an hour.
3. Mention Christopher Eccleston or Amber Benson as freqently as possible if you want a glazed look.
4. Tell really terrible stories about things you shouldn't have done if you want me to laugh hysterically.
5. Don't worry about a second round. I was drunk the moment lips touched cider and I'll stay that way for at least two hours.

I friended [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs ages and ages ago because of her brilliant, 100,000+ word fic Living History, which I recommend then, I recommend today, and I will recommend probably forever. It's the single best fanfiction I've ever read. Period.

However, [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs's journal contains way more than fic. She's a former journalist with a social justice streak a mile wide and she's not afraid to show it. Usually, she's after politicians who would diminish our personal freedoms for a little security (making us less free and less secure).

Right now, she's tracking the efforts of a group called Warriors for Innocence (although it may just be one very vocal person from what I can see). They're pressuring LJ/Six Apart to purge journals with interests like "rape", "incest", "child abuse", etc. They're doing so without oversight and without understanding. Many of these journals/communities are fannish, and are read and run by people who would never dream of such acts except in a fictional context (which is their right, I should add, even if I don't like it). WfI's complete lack of understanding is underlined when they refer to the journals/comms as "web pages" and not, say, journals or communities.

Links to all of Liz's posts on the subject, plus the efforts of others can be found at this round-up entry. I urge you to read as much of it as possible, especially [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs's correspondence with a rep for Warriors for Innocence. It's very enlightening.

While most of us are content to nod our heads or just blow steam when we hear about this kind of crap, [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs is doing something. She went straight to the source and asked for answers and she got them. For that alone, she has my undying respect.
