Back in the day and once again
Jan. 1st, 2005 09:52 amBack when I was living in Iowa City, before I had to start selling off massive chunks of my video collection just to pay the rent, I had a really neat way of ordering my videos (yes, this is where I show that I really am the son of a librarian). I had them divided into a Master's section and Everything Else. The Master's section was for any director whose work I felt was significant or enjoyable. I had to own at least two films by said director, and the films were ordered by the person's last name. All the other films were arranged alphabetically on a different bookshelf.
So, it was like - Bookshelf One: Woody Allen, Dario Argento, Danny Boyle, David Cronenberg, Cameron Crowe, Terence Fisher, Terry Gilliam, Alfred Hitchcock, Lloyd Kaufman, Gene Kelly, Stanley Kubrick, Fritz Lang, Peter Jackson, Roman Polanski, George Romero, Ridley Scott, Steven Soderbergh, Steven Spielberg, Paul Verhoeven, James Whale, Billy Wilder, and Ed Wood.
Bookshelf Two: A Movie, Another Movie, Further Movie, That Other Movie, Yellow Submarine
And I was going over my films today, and I don't quite have enough multiple film directors to really do that again. But I will. I have a list of 30 directors who I'm going to be buying almost exclusively from for a while, including some of the names on that list above and the Coen Bros., Mike Nichols, Charlie Chaplin, Howard Hawks, David Lean, Federico Fellini, Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorcese, Edgar Ulmer, John Carpenter, and Stuart Gordon (and others).
It was a really neat set-up because I tend to think in terms of directors and will more often go "I'd like to see a film by ..." than I will "I want to watch a film in this genre..."
First post of the new year and I'm talking about movies. Oh dear.
Anyway, until I have enough directors, I'm splitting up the collection by genre.
