About a year ago, my friend Richard gave me a CD labeled "Music for Matt". It was a CD he'd burned for our friend, who was in fact named Matt. For whatever reason, he'd burned two and written on them both "Music for Matt (computer power symbol)"
So, I've had this disc for awhile, and frankly, nearly every track completely fucking rocks. But I never got a tracklisting, and Richard's taste in music is... well, it's based in rock, but Richard was the Music Critic for the local college paper (that's how I met him, actually), so he grabbed some really obscure bands sometimes... Or obscure to me, anyway...
So tonight? I Googlesearched the lyrics of every track - and discovered what bands I should really be paying attention to.
1) Can't tell. The lyrics are unintelligible. My least favorite track, anyway.
2) John Vanderslice - Bill Gates Must Die
3) Girls Against Boys - Disco 666
4) Spoon - The Way We Get By
5) Fugazi - The Waiting Room
6) The White Stripes - The Big Three Killed My Baby (Jen called this one)
7) I THINK it's Murder by Death - I'm Afraid of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf*
8) Bright Eyes - The Calendar Hung Itself
9) No idea. Lyrics barely determinable and no results when I search 'em. Really like the song, too.
10) The Faint - Violent
11) Gwenmars - Venus
12) No idea. Crap track.
13) OK Go - What To Do (sweetass refrain - "Mediocre People do Exceptional Things All the Time")
14) Iggy Pop - Search & Destroy (this one I knew)
15) Rival Schools - High Acetate
16) Guided by Voices - The Enemy
17) The only known live recording of Richard's band. Bad quality.
18) Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945 (
recognitions? You're right. This rocks.
19) No clue. Weird lyrics, though. Very raw sound. Raw meaning lacking talent but not enthusiasm.
* Weirdly enough, the only place the lyrics for #7 were available were on somebody's LJ userinfo...
