RTD isn't being the least bit coy about this season's arc. It's all about how The Doctor is Buffy and Angel all mixed into one. He's the one boy in all the world, with the power to travel through time and stop nasty villains and devious plots. He can take along companions, but at the end of the day, he's the Time Lord (or, as he telling calls himself "the Lord of Time"), and they're just the assistants. Adding Mickey on as the Zeppo really pushes that point.
At the same time, he's also the ageless wanderer, forever young, forever forced to watch those he loves wither and die as he never seems to do. He can't ever get too close, because he'll have to deal with their inevitable passing as he continues on.
The Girl in the Fireplace really pushed that with The Doctor flitting in and out of Madame de Pompadour's existence, watching her get older as she bemoans the slow path. His time with her must seem like his eventual memory of his companions -- flitting and not enough (except from what I hear about Adric). You can see he's already pushing Rose away a little after School Reunion, deciding for both of them the path of least painfulness.
His self-centered arrogance is starting to come to a head. While 9 drove forward with a desire to escape his past and make amends for it, 10 is plain leaving history behind on a lark. During the ball, his decision to rescue Madame was risky, but it was also selfish -- Mickey and Rose were left behind without a way off that ship, and he never stopped to consider that once.
10 is an ass. A delightful, vivacious ass, but an ass all the same. Then again, I think that makes him more interesting...
