I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. I read your fic, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...she likes office supplies."

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal.

(And if you've newly friended me, why not introduce yourself?)

Okay, sounds interesting enough:

I'm absolutely fascinated by myths, legends, and fairy tales from around the world, but a hatred of Joseph Campbell prevents me from taking a formal schooling on the subject.

The Old Man and the Sea is my comfort book. Occasionally I'll pick it up when I'm really stressed about something. It takes me an hour and a half to two hours to read it, usually, and I can just get absorbed in it and forget all about my troubles for that length of time.

Let's just say my theory is that people should read the myths themselves and draw their own conclusions, and that M. Campbell's ideas on a hero's journey irritates me. This is possibly a side effect of having to memorize it once for class.

Huh. Hadn't thought of it like that before. To be honest, I haven't really gone through the entire set yet. They were a birthday present some years back from my mother. Which is not to say that my Mom does not give cool gifts. It's just that an educational DVD does tend to fall by the wayside.

I'll admit, I'm probably biased, as the first time I ever analyzed mythology (comparing and contrasting Native American myths about fire), I had no idea Campbell existed. Then he disagreed with my conclusions when I did take a look at his stuff.

Educational DVDs can be good things! Unless they're Simon Schama's series on the history of Britain. We had to watch that for class. It took three months. You know how some people talk with their hands? Schama talks with his head.

And, of course, all this is coming from the girl who got wrapped up in a taped and televised lecture series on the history of mankind on the local public access channel. I'll stop babbling in your journal now.

You should check it out sometime. It's a very good book. And the left hand thing does come up, but it's not really a big part of the book. The old man's left hand cramps up at one point, is all.

Why? It's just getting interesting.

I'm not going to argue against educational DVDs. Catch me in the right mood and I'll watch anything The History Channel has to offer. History and mythology (and often the two become the same) are very much favored subjects of mine (even if I've been a slacker on both counts of late).

What do you think of the "entertainment documentary" form that's risen up lately in the hands of Michael Moore, Morgan Spurlock, and others? On the one hand, it's great -- more people watching documentaries. On the other hand -- yeah, but what have documentaries become?

Oh. See, as a lefty, I've become rather aware of mass culture and it's attitudes towards the left hand, but sometimes I get my info second... er... hand.

Documentaries have always been a pretty hard sell. I think it was somewhere in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants that documentaries were defined as "really boring movies". I could be wrong about the source of that quote, though. So if people want to spice them up with a more entertaining format, I'm all for it. A lot of what I first knew about history came from Shakespeare, or Lion in Winter, or other plays. My Modern World History teacher actually told me once that I should congratulate my theater director, as plays were the only reason why I knew anything.

So entertain the masses if you like, just as long as you don't lose the information part of the program. That's pretty hard to do.

Unfortunately, I never got around to watching Michael Moore's stuff. I've heard both good and bad things about it, but am generally too lazy to actually watch.

I absolutely loved Trekkies though.

I have a strange and somewhat shameful love of sporting event movies. Those lame football ones? Love 'em. Hockey ones (up to and including The Mighty Ducks)? Love 'em. Seabiscuit? Love it!

I think it has something to do with the feeling of victory after working so hard for something. I love these movies even more when they are based on true stories (i.e., Miracle, Seabiscuit).
