Post-Vividcon Wrap-up

First of all, I'm pleased as punch to have added a new fandom to Vividcon's database. I'll be adding more as time goes on. Next year... I have plans. Awesome plans. Of awesome.

I'll be making a separate post here later that's a general introduction for folks friending me for the first time. Don't be shy about friending me if I haven't done so first. I met a lot of neat people at Vividcon and I'm having trouble remembering all of their LJ/DW names. I should've kept a notebook!

Vividcon was... exceptionally different. I haven't had this much socialization at a Con since, um... ever. In a lot of ways, it was thoroughly exhausting for someone like me who's a stealth introvert. I did get to meet a ton of great people, see a lot of awesome vids, and learn a few things.

I had a minor-key introduction to showing my content to a group for the first time in the Bechdel Test vidshow, where my Josie and the Pussycats vid More Than One Way to Celebrity Skin a Pussycat debuted. I think the response went quite well, all things told.

Then came Premieres. The response to my Hammer Frankenstein vid Don't Stop Me Now didn't seem as positive, but at the time, I felt it was largely because I couldn't really hear that much over the sound of Freddie Mercury. A few people did approach me later to tell me they liked it, though!

Then... then came Vid Review. I don't know really know how I felt about it. I think I heard more of the negative comments than the positive ones, but listening to other tear-downs directed at vids made by relative newbies, I can't say I found the experience to be an endorsement for return visits. I'm committed to being a better vidder and I will improve, however.

A list of vid recs will come later. Right now I should probably get back to work.

It was terrific meeting you at the con, and I really hope to see you there again.

Some of the comments at the con can be really off-putting, but I just try to keep in mind that it's usually just a certain, relatively small but very vocal segment of con-goers who feel that way. I just try to take it for what it's worth and try to use it to improve whenever possible.

Like I said, it was great meeting you, and I really enjoyed your vids.

It was great meeting you as well.

I'm trying to keep the "vocal minority" aspect of the criticism in mind, as well as the fact that many of the comments had at least some merit. I'll admit I'm a very possessive papa when it comes to my work, but I'm hoping that the lessons I took with me from the various vidshows will help me develop my vidding voice over the next year.

next year you should join us in the vid review bingo game. after a while you hear the same comments leveled (often by the same few people) at every vidder at one time or another.

not saying the comments are all invalid - but it made this year's vid review absolutely enjoyable.

I wish I'd know about bingo.

How did I not know about vid review bingo? I must *must* have in on this next year. (If I manage to stomach going to vid review again... :(

I only got a chance to meet you briefly by the elevators on Saturday, but people who got to talk to you more confirm that my initial thoughts (dude is kinda awesome) were correct so, *wave*.

The thing about vid review is I tend to think of it as a very small part of what's going on. It can provide useful feedback and a snapshot reaction, but since there are so many vids to get through you don't always get the broadest range of reactions. The larger picture includes the conversations taking place in hallways and the lobby and at meals and in-between panels and that sort of thing. And if you find it really unpleasant there is no rule that says you have to attend vid review at all. There are always people who choose to simply hang in the consuite or grab lunch instead.

I really do hope you come back next year!

<3 you. <3 your vids. There are many awesome people who attend the con, and as for vid review, wow, I really hope to take part in bingo next year because the two years i've been were, uh, special.

(I really think better moderation would make a difference. What would help, other than a total format change, would be managing time well from the start and really emphasising finding at least one positive/constructive thing to say about everything single vid -- and both of those are on the moderators. I mean, sure, finding positive things to say is on the attendees, but the moderators need to make sure something positive/constructive IS said, if the attendees aren't offering anything up.)

HI!

Hhehehe, Don't Stop Me Now is so fun and witty. I like the way it's seemingly happy until the end when things go to hell. I don't like Queen, which comes from an obsessed friend that killed all enjoyment of their music from playing it over and over for years, but you made me bounce my head to the music! It's so cool to see an older source (and a Frankenstein no less). :)
