Dark Angel

Three episodes in so far. This show's working for me about 70/30 -- most of the 70 being on the concepts (I'm a sucker for a good post-apocalypse) and Michael Weatherly's lived-in performance as Logan Cale. Jessica Alba is sometimes flat, but sometimes she gets a real spark of charm that smooths over those bits quite nicely. The whole angle with Manticore is already wearing thin -- the hapless pursuer trope has been done better and John Savage is way too much of a dick for me to buy.

Things start picking up round about episode 5. Alba has the same problem as Max as David Boreanaz had as Angel, too much brooding, but that's more the writing/directing than the acting as you can see on the rare occasions she's given an actual emotion to work with. Her scenes with Jensen Ackles in S2 really spark (yes I shipped them, how can you tell? ;). Savage's character goes through some interesting twists and turns as the series progresses, but nothing beats his speech at the AA meeting. :D And Manticore gets replaced by an even more insidious bunch of hapless pursuers in S2 that'll have you cringing every time you see Martin Cummins' face for the rest of your life. *sigh* I love this show. :)

I think I'm on episode 5 right now. And you're right. Things just got very complicated in an interesting way.
