BSG Miniseries

Enjoyed it? Sure. Hooked? I wouldn't say that. Will I still be sticking the first season on my Netflix queue? You bet -- because I *might* get hooked. I'm like the guy who tries heroin, shakes his head and says, "You know what? Not quite completely dependent on this yet. Let's give it another shot." I'm sick in the head.

Pilot episodes (or miniseries, whatever) have the unfortunate burden of having to introduce a basic concept, a passel of characters, large chunks of their backstory, all while serving the master of clear and present conflict.

Luckily, BSG is ready-made for clear and present conflict (unlike, say Firefly, which -- much as I love the opening two-parter -- does need to kick its own behind to get moving). Action happens on the fly, and only about a third of the character exposition (mostly relating to Cmdr. Adama's son Zak) feels awkwardly wedged in.

A *lot* of characters. Seems like television's making a shift towards huge ensembles lately, which is fine if it's played right. BSG seems to have a handle on it -- each character gets their due, even two minor bridge officers whose names completely escape me right now. Some interesting personalities that I'm looking forward to seeing again.

Except I, uh, don't understand the Starbuck love. Interesting character on paper, acted well enough, but there's something missing there that just doesn't let me "get" her. Mostly I thought she was an arrogant asshole and not a pleasant one. She appears to have improved by Season 2 -- I liked her more in last week's ep, but felt the same "meh" this week.

For my money, the Roslin/Adama conflict really played the best for me. Both of them have completely valid viewpoints given the situation, but they grate a bit (and from my understanding, they completely clash by the end of Season 1). I love that kind of drama. Toss in the wild card of Apollo finally forgiving his father but finding a leader he really respects in Roslin... Fun fun fun.

Baltar. Love. Love. Love. I want to see more of him. Front and center, every episode. The all-scheming, all-dancing around the truth Baltar Show. Watch as Baltar connives! Watch as Baltar plots! Watch as Baltar pulls a Crichton with a Harvey you'd actually want to see naked!

I think the miniseries took a misstep with separating Adama from the ship for a little heart-to-heart with the Cylon. I understand that they had to establish to somebody other than CompletelyAwesomeBaltar that Cylons can look like us, but this is the sort of plot that works better as character filler in the middle of your season. In a pilot, it just slows the action down and makes a grand concept seems small and tinny.

Speaking of small and tinny, how awesome is it that they made the requisite cable television cheese factor a plot point? Somebody deserves a hug for that.

I don't think I really got hooked until about 3 episodes into the first season and then all of a sudden it was just mad BSG love. Dunno what it was that did it, but I was gone.

And yes, Baltar. We love Crazy Doctor Baltar. Lots and lots.

They had me at '33'. Just the sheer audacity to set it so soon after the mini, everyone tired and strained, the moral conumdrum at the end where the producers didn't tell us whether the actions were justified or not...

'33' said to me 'We're not afraid to take chances'.

What I find so fascinating about the new series is how different it is from the original. Let me be honest, I have CheezyLurve for the original and own it on DVD, but looking at it with an adult eye, even before the new series, there were a lot of things on my wishlist.

The new series basically gave me what I wanted. :-)

As I pointed out at the time on the BSG list I was on: the miniseries did it's job. It laid down the basic elements and plot and made me interested in seeing more. I didn't lovelovelove it, but I liked it and it sold me on the concept. If you look at the mini like the first season of any genre show, it holds up very well.

I got totally hooked with the first ep of S1, '33.' And since SciFi wa doing it's selling job, I got to see 'Water' right after it in succession. Both of them back to back? Awesome. No other word for it. '33' had me on the edge of my seat and I haven't looked back.

I think you're dead on about the Adama-Laura conflict and it gets more interesting as S1 progresses to its current explosion in S2. I don't dislike, but I don't like how they're setting her up to be "all that."

My favorite characters are actually the secondary ones. Tyrol (Chief), Calley (his gal Friday on the landing deck), Gaeta (male bridge officer), Dualla (female bridge officer), Billy, and Helo. Plus, Adama rocks like a rocking thing, but I suspect it's my EJO love talking.

And yeah, BSG does an amazing job balancing out a large cast. What I especially appreciate is that they don't try to shoehorn everyone into an episode. If a character doesn't fit, they don't fit and they're not used. But everyone gets their due in the course of a season and everyone gets their moment to shine. To me, that's the thing that counts.

duh, "I don't dislike Starbuck."

And ignore the bad grammar. It's 90 degrees in my apartment right now.

Your bad grammar is still better than 99.9% of the Internet's good grammar.

I may just buy the series DVD outright. After I buy Lost. And Veronica Mars. And the Bela Lugosi collection. And the Hammer Horror collection. And the Val Lewton collection...

Shit. These people need to stop releasing DVDs that I need.

I think the miniseries took a misstep with separating Adama from the ship for a little heart-to-heart with the Cylon.

Yeah, that was definitely the low point for me, too.

Except I, uh, don't understand the Starbuck love.

I had the same reaction until episode three, and then OMGLOVE. Episode three is definitely the hook for BSG.
