Ten-Year Sockiversary
So, about ten years ago, I was at what I can probably scientifically prove was the lowest part of my life for a variety of reasons that are really kind of boring.
At the same time, I had been following this great Buffy-based LJ RPG called
sunnydale_socks. It was witty, well-written, and filled in the interstitial spaces between episodes.
Since I really had nothing better to do, I submitted an application to join. Since the major character slots were all filled up, I applied to play Parker Abrams, the asshole who used and discarded Buffy at the beginning of Season 4. Apparently the application was a bit controversial, for reasons that should've seemed obvious in hindsight. In my head, it was obvious that I was going to be playing Parker as an unlovable asshole who was the constant subject of ridicule and pain. However, I was a guy asking to enter a female space with an application to play a character that could easily be handled in a very repulsive, problematic way. Despite this, I was accepted on a trial basis.
I made my first post to the Socks ten years ago today and my life has not been the same since.
I can trace a ridiculous number of my life's high points since then directly to my involvement in the Socks and probably a much greater number can be traced indirectly. I know that my path to vidding came through the Socks. Without the Socks, I might not have had the motivation to move to Phoenix (which... whole 'nother story there) and without Phoenix, there's no
echan in my life.
Most importantly, though, is the friends. We've drifted a bit in the last few years, but I still count many of the Socks to be close and personal friends. Heck, I met
diannelamerc and
lizbetann through the Socks and they can't seem to get rid of me! In November, I am heading out to another Sock's wedding, which will also act as a Sock reunion. There will be cuddling and sandwiches and trying to remember obscure references to pineapples and whatnot. We may also have to re-enact the Great Dancefloor Drag-en-ing of 2006.
I am a better person for having these folks in my life.
